Alice Andrew Battenberg Edinburgh Philip

EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant black and white portrait captures Princess Alice of Battenberg, later known as Princess Andrew of Greece, in her early twenties around the year 1905. Daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg (later known as Mountbatten) and Princess Victoria of Hesse, Alice was born in England but of German and Greek descent. Her unique heritage and the complex political climate of the time would eventually lead her to leave England and move to Greece with her husband, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark. Princess Alice is seen in the portrait wearing a simple yet elegant high-necked blouse with a lace collar and a long, flowing skirt. Her dark hair is styled in loose waves, framing her delicate features and expressive eyes. The Princess's refined and regal bearing speaks of her noble lineage and the grace and poise that would later be passed down to her son, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time of this photograph, Alice was still living in England, where she was a popular figure in society. She would go on to marry Prince Andrew in 1904 and have five children, including the future consort of the British monarch. The marriage was not without its challenges, however, as tensions between Greece and other European powers led to political instability and exile for the Greek royal family. Despite the hardships, Princess Alice remained devoted to her husband and her children, and her strength and resilience were an inspiration to them all. This beautiful portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played an important role in the history of both Britain and Greece.
