EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Professor Henrich Focke (1890-1975) is seen intently studying blueprints spread out before him, surrounded by the intricate machinery and tools of his aviation workshop. The renowned German aircraft designer and maker, Focke is best known for his pioneering work in the field of aviation during the interwar period and World War II. Born in Bremen, Germany, Focke's fascination with flight began early in life. He studied engineering at the Technical University of Aachen and went on to work for Focke-Wulf, a leading German aircraft manufacturer. In 1931, Focke founded his own design bureau, Focke-Achgelis, where he focused on developing innovative aircraft designs. One of Focke's most significant achievements was the design of the Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 "Drache" (Dragon), a versatile aircraft that could take off and land vertically like a helicopter but also had the ability to fly like a fixed-wing airplane. This groundbreaking design, which was the world's first successful tiltrotor aircraft, was intended for use as a military transport and reconnaissance aircraft during World War II. Despite the challenges and limitations of the war, Focke's innovative spirit and engineering prowess continued to push the boundaries of aviation technology. In this photograph, we see him deep in thought, no doubt pondering the next groundbreaking design that would revolutionize the world of aviation. Professor Henrich Focke's contributions to the field of aviation were immense, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence engineers and designers to this day. This photograph offers a glimpse into the mind of a true aviation pioneer, a man who dared to dream and create the impossible.
