Born on October 8, 1890, in Columbus, Ohio, Rickenbacker's passion for aviation began at an early age. As the United States entered the Great War in 1917, Rickenbacker joined the Army and was assigned to the 94th Aero Squadron, where he quickly distinguished himself as a formidable pilot. With a total of 26 aerial victories, Rickenbacker became the highest-scoring American fighter pilot of the war. His exploits earned him the nickname "Ace of Aces" and the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Croix de Guerre.
