Born Columbus Leading Ohio Pilot Rickenbacker Vernon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the dashing and determined figure of Edward Vernon Rickenbacker, an American pilot and the leading air ace of the United States Army Air Service during World War I. Born on October 8, 1890, in Columbus, Ohio, Rickenbacker's passion for aviation began at an early age. He learned to fly in 1912 and quickly became enamored with the freedom and exhilaration of soaring through the skies. As the United States entered the Great War in 1917, Rickenbacker joined the Army and was assigned to the 94th Aero Squadron, where he quickly distinguished himself as a formidable pilot. With a total of 26 aerial victories, Rickenbacker became the highest-scoring American fighter pilot of the war. His exploits earned him the nickname "Ace of Aces" and the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Croix de Guerre. This photograph captures Rickenbacker in his element, standing confidently in front of his trusty Nieuport 28C.1 fighter plane, its wings adorned with the distinctive insignia of the 94th Aero Squadron. The image exudes a sense of courage and determination, a testament to the heroism and bravery of the men and women who took to the skies during the First World War. Rickenbacker's legacy extended beyond the battlefield, as he went on to found Eastern Air Lines, one of the first major American airlines. However, it is his service as a pilot and his incredible accomplishments during World War I that continue to inspire and captivate us today. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era and the indomitable spirit of those who dared to take to the skies and defend their country.
