EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken at the 1947 Royal Aeronautical Society Garden Party at Radlett on 14 September, we find two esteemed test pilots, Sqn Ldr Albert Kenneth Cook DFC and Sqn Ldr Hedley George Hazelden DFC, engaged in a lively conversation. Both men were decorated war heroes and trailblazers in the field of aviation. On the left stands Sqn Ldr Albert Kenneth Cook DFC, an accomplished Avro test pilot. Cook's distinguished military career began during World War II, where he flew various types of aircraft, including the Avro Anson and the Avro Lancaster. His exceptional skills and bravery earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1943. After the war, Cook continued his aviation journey by joining Avro as a test pilot, where he played a crucial role in testing and developing new aircraft designs. To his right is Sqn Ldr Hedley George Hazelden DFC, a renowned Handley Page test pilot. Hazelden's military career also began during World War II, where he flew the Handley Page Halifax and the Handley Page Hampden. Like Cook, Hazelden's courage and expertise were recognized with the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1943. Post-war, Hazelden joined Handley Page as a test pilot, where he contributed significantly to the development and testing of various aircraft models. The Garden Party at Radlett, hosted by the Royal Aeronautical Society, provided an excellent opportunity for these two esteemed test pilots to connect and share their experiences. Their shared backgrounds in military aviation and their current roles as test pilots for Avro and Handley Page, respectively, made for a fascinating conversation. This photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and mutual respect between two pioneers in the world of aviation.
