Fight Gladiator Gladius Greaves Principal Samnite Scutum Shield Spalart
EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Robert von Spalart's Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages (1796), depicts a fierce battle between two Samnite gladiators. The Samnites were an ancient Italian tribe known for their military prowess and resistance to Roman rule. In this image, the gladiators are skillfully wielding their gladius swords, the short, stabbing weapons that were the signature armament of the Roman legions. The gladiators are also armed with large, rectangular shields, or scutum, which provided ample protection against enemy attacks. Their greaves, or ocrea, and helmets shield their legs and heads, respectively, adding an extra layer of defense. The intricate details of the engraving show the gladiators' muscular physiques and the intense concentration on their faces as they engage in combat. The handcoloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, transporting us back in time to the ancient world of gladiatorial combat.
