Albano Bearded Brooch Bust Carlsberg Cloak Copenhagen Dynasty Fibula Glyptotek Marble Septimius Severan Severus Torso Paludamentum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning marble bust portrays Septimius Severus, a Roman Emperor who ruled from 193 to 211 A.D. The sculpture, dated around 200-210 A.D., was discovered near Albano, a town located in the Alban Hills south of Rome. Septimius Severus is depicted with a serious expression and a well-groomed, bearded face. His hair is styled in the traditional Roman imperial manner, with a diadem resting atop his head. The emperor is shown wearing the paludamentum, a cloak that was the traditional outer garment of the Roman military, signifying his military background. Septimius Severus was the founder of the Severan Dynasty, which marked a significant period in the history of the Roman Empire. He was born in Leptis Magna in North Africa and rose to power through military campaigns. During his reign, he undertook extensive building projects in Rome, including the construction of the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Baths of Caracalla. He also expanded the Roman Empire's borders, particularly in the east, and implemented various reforms. This bust is now housed in the Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it is a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of the Roman Empire. The intricate details of the sculpture, including the brooch on the emperor's cloak and the fibula on his tunic, provide valuable insights into the fashion and craftsmanship of the time. The bust also offers a glimpse into the face and features of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the course of Roman history.
