EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Dudley Digges (1583-1639): A Prominent Statesman and Master of the Rolls in English History This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir Dudley Digges, an influential figure in English politics and law during the early modern period. Born in 1583, Digges rose to prominence as a statesman and legal authority, serving various roles in the government and ultimately becoming Master of the Rolls in 1628. Digges' career began in the court of King James I, where he served as a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. He was later appointed as a Member of Parliament for various constituencies, including Maidstone and New Romney. In 1616, Digges was made a Serjeant-at-Law, and in 1618, he was knighted by King James I. As Master of the Rolls, Digges presided over the Court of Appeal in Chancery, the highest court in England for civil matters. He was known for his fairness and expertise in the law, earning him a reputation as a trusted and respected judge. Digges' tenure as Master of the Rolls was marked by his efforts to modernize the court and improve its efficiency. Despite his success, Digges faced challenges in his personal life. He was married twice, and both marriages ended in tragedy. His first wife, Elizabeth, died in childbirth in 1619, leaving him with three young children. His second wife, Anne, died in 1636, just a few years after their marriage. Sir Dudley Digges' legacy extends beyond his legal and political achievements. He was a patron of the arts and supported the poet John Donne, who dedicated several poems to him. Digges' portrait, with its solemn yet thoughtful expression, serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to English history as a statesman, Master of the Rolls, and patron of the arts.
