Bluebird Bonneville Campbells Flats Hour Malcolm Miles Salt Speed Utah 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures Sir Malcolm Campbell's iconic racing car, Bluebird, as it sets a new land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, in 1935. Sir Malcolm, a British racing driver and automobile engineer, had been pursuing the land speed record since the late 1920s, and this achievement marked his second world record, having previously set the mark at 272.78 mph in 1931. The Bluebird, a sleek and aerodynamic vehicle, was specifically designed for high-speed racing on land. Powered by a Rolls-Royce V12 engine, it weighed only 1,500 pounds and was streamlined to minimize air resistance. On this fateful day in September 1935, Sir Malcolm reached an astonishing speed of 301 miles per hour, shattering the previous record by over 28 miles per hour. The Bonneville Salt Flats, a desolate and flat expanse of salt, provided the perfect conditions for high-speed trials. The salt surface allowed for maximum traction and reduced air resistance, making it the ideal location for land speed records. Sir Malcolm's record-breaking run took place during the 5th International Land Speed Trials, which attracted racers from around the world. This photograph is a testament to Sir Malcolm Campbell's determination, engineering prowess, and the spirit of competition that defined the golden age of land speed racing. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, when the pursuit of speed and the thrill of breaking records captured the imagination of the world.
