Sir Samuel Auchmuty (1756-1822): A Distinguished British Soldier in the Age of Napoleon This evocative portrait captures the stern yet resolute visage of Sir Samuel Auchmuty, a British soldier who rose through the ranks to become a prominent figure in the military during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Scotland in 1756, Auchmuty joined the British Army at a young age and quickly distinguished himself in battle. He served with distinction in the Seven Years' War, earning the moniker 'The Hero of Minden' for his bravery during the Battle of Minden in 1759. Auchmuty's military career continued to flourish during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He played a key role in the defense of Gibraltar against a French siege in 1782 and later served as the Governor of Gibraltar from 1802 to 1804. In 1809, he was appointed as the Adjutant-General to the Duke of Wellington, a position he held until his retirement from the army in 1815.
