Braid Dieu Epaulettes Mote Nicolas Sash Signature Soult Dalmatie Rouillard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the distinguished likeness of Nicolas-Jean de Dieu Soult, Duc de Dalmatie, a renowned French soldier and statesman of the early 19th century. Soult's military career began in 1785, and he rose through the ranks to become a marshal of France in 1804. He served under Napoleon Bonaparte and played a significant role in several major battles, including Austerlitz and Wagram. After retiring from the military, Soult entered politics and was appointed as a peer of France in 1815. He served as the Minister of War under King Louis-Philippe from 1834 to 1836. In this portrait, Soult is depicted in full military regalia, adorned with the insignia of his rank. His epaulettes, bedecked with gold braid and the distinctive blue and red stripes of the French army, are a testament to his military accomplishments. The sash across his chest bears the stars and stripes of the Legion of Honor, which he was awarded in 1803. The signature of the artist, Mote, and the name of the publisher, Rouillard, are inscribed at the bottom of the print. Mote was a prolific artist who specialized in portraits of military and political figures. Rouillard was a leading publisher of prints in Paris during the 19th century. Together, they produced a vast catalog of prints documenting the history of their time. This print of Soult is a valuable historical artifact, providing a glimpse into the life and career of a remarkable French soldier and statesman.
