EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the intricately patterned shell of a Vestinautilus carinifer, an extinct nautiloid cephalopod belonging to the class Cephalopoda and phylum Mollusca. The Vestinautilus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 75 to 66 million years ago, in what is now the Atlantic Ocean. This ancient mollusk is recognized by its distinctive, coiled shell, which features a series of ribs or keels that run along its length. Nautiloids were some of the most successful and long-lived groups of marine invertebrates, with a fossil record dating back to the Early Ordovician period, around 480 million years ago. They are closely related to modern-day squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish, and like their living relatives, they were likely agile and intelligent creatures. The Vestinautilus shell, now a precious fossil, offers a glimpse into the ancient world of the marine environment during the Late Cretaceous period. Its intricate design and delicate patterns are a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world. This photograph was expertly captured by Beatriz Aguirre-Urreta, a skilled photographer with a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Her work showcases the wonders of the fossil record and the intricacies of the natural world, inspiring awe and wonder in all who view it.
