Debbie Gibb seen here with father Ian and Emily the baby elephat at Martins bank
Debbie Gibb seen here with father Ian and Emily the baby elephat at Martins bank Daveygate, York July 13th 1965.
Your " friendly and understanding" bank, Martins, is currently advertising that you can take your pet elephant into any branch while opening an account and no one will mind.
And if you think this is just the dream world of the ad-men, you re quite wrong.
Three year old Debbie Gibb went along to deposiit £ 2 at the York branch in Daveygate. And Dad Ian Gibb, curator of Flamingo Park Zoo - who went with her, told no one of their planto take Emily the baby elephant with them.
But their arrival with their two and a half ton friend didn t raise an eyebrow.
The customers just politely moved sideways to give Emily a little more room as they would for any lady with a 70 inch waist watscan - - 26/10/2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print from 1965, we see Debbie Gibb accompanied by her father Ian and an adorable baby elephant named Emily at Martins bank in Daveygate, York. The caption highlights the unique and welcoming nature of Martins bank, which is currently advertising that customers can bring their pet elephants into any branch without any objections. Contrary to what one might expect, this advertisement turns out to be more than just a fantasy created by ad-men. Three-year-old Debbie visited the York branch with her £2 deposit while her father, who happens to be the curator of Flamingo Park Zoo, secretly planned to bring along Emily. To everyone's surprise, their arrival with the two-and-a-half-ton gentle giant did not raise a single eyebrow among the customers. Instead, they graciously made way for Emily as they would for any lady requiring extra space due to her impressive 70-inch waist watscan. This heartwarming image captures both humor and innocence as it showcases a delightful moment between a child and an extraordinary animal within the walls of a friendly and understanding bank. Photographer Tom Buist beautifully encapsulates this snapshot from memory lane where imagination meets reality in unexpected ways.
