Black flags seen flying from all most every building in Brussels believe to be flown

Black flags seen flying from all most every building in Brussels believe to be flown following the loss of the Leige Forts to the Germans. The coming of the German troops was kept a secret from the people of Brussels until the last minute. The proclamation of the mayor hit the people like a clap of thunder. The mayor went out to meet the troops and upon their appearance had a white flag held aloft. He talked then with a German officer and received from the latter the assurance that nothing would happen to the people if they would give up all acts of violence towards the Germans.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a haunting scene from the heart of Brussels in 1914. Black flags can be seen fluttering ominously from nearly every building, symbolizing the profound loss and despair that engulfed the city following the fall of Leige Forts to the Germans. The arrival of German troops was shrouded in secrecy, leaving the unsuspecting people of Brussels shocked when they received news through a proclamation by their mayor. The image portrays a moment frozen in time when hope collided with fear. The mayor bravely ventured out to meet the approaching troops, clutching a white flag as a sign of surrender. Conversations between him and an imposing German officer unfolded against this backdrop of tension and uncertainty. In this snapshot, we witness not only architectural beauty but also conflicting emotions etched on faces lining the streets. Shops stand as witnesses to history unfolding before them, while ordinary citizens grapple with their new reality under occupation. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of how war disrupts lives and reshapes cities. It encapsulates both resilience and vulnerability within its frames - capturing an era defined by conflict but also highlighting moments where humanity sought solace amidst chaos. Castle Ivor's lens has preserved this slice of history for us to reflect upon, reminding us never to forget those who endured such tumultuous times during World War One.
