Date 25/7/09
July 25th 1909.
Louis Bleriot, pictured with his plane on the Cliffs of Dover overlooking the English Channel. Bleriot, shown with his wife had just flown the channel, making him the first man to do so. The trip from Sangatte near Calais to Dover Castle took him 43 minutes, averaging a speed of 40 miles an hour. The flight had few mishaps, which is more than can be said for the landing. As he tried to land, he was caught in strong wind currents. To escape these he switched off his engine and uncerimoniously fell to earth. Amazingly, he was only slightly injured.
