Bleriot with his wife on Dover cliffs after his successful flight of the English channel

Bleriot with his wife on Dover cliffs after his successful flight of the English channel
P 9966
Box 35
Date 25/7/09
July 25th 1909.
Louis Bleriot, pictured with his plane on the Cliffs of Dover overlooking the English Channel. Bleriot, shown with his wife had just flown the channel, making him the first man to do so. The trip from Sangatte near Calais to Dover Castle took him 43 minutes, averaging a speed of 40 miles an hour. The flight had few mishaps, which is more than can be said for the landing. As he tried to land, he was caught in strong wind currents. To escape these he switched off his engine and uncerimoniously fell to earth. Amazingly, he was only slightly injured.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Louis Bleriot and his wife celebrate on the Dover cliffs after his historic flight across the English Channel, July 25th, 1909. In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we witness a moment of triumph and relief for Bleriot, who had just become the first person to successfully complete this daring feat. With his trusty plane by his side, Bleriot stands tall against the picturesque backdrop of the Cliffs of Dover.
