EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the summer of 1965, where Stoke City players find themselves in an unusual training session. At the request of Alan Hargreaves, a physical training expert and senior lecturer at Madeley College in Staffordshire, the team is engaged in a unique "blow-up" exercise. Stoke manager Tony Waddington sought Mr. Hargreaves' expertise to revolutionize their pre-season training regimen and bring it onto a scientific platform. The players eagerly participate as they try out the "spirometer" a device designed to measure lung capacity, at the iconic Victoria Ground. Captured within this frozen moment is goalkeeper Bobby Irvine taking his turn with the spirometer while being closely observed by Alan Hargreaves himself. The intensity on Irvine's face reflects both determination and curiosity as he pushes himself to new limits under Mr. Hargreaves' watchful eye. This photograph not only showcases Stoke City's commitment to innovation but also highlights their dedication towards improving performance through cutting-edge techniques during an era when sports science was still in its infancy. Preserved by John Robson from Memory Lane Prints, this image serves as a nostalgic reminder of how football training has evolved over time and offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in Stoke City's history.
