EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the demolition of The Royal Aquarium and Winter Garden in Westminster. Standing tall since its opening in 1876, this magnificent building was a true architectural gem located just west of Westminster Abbey on Tothill Street. Designed by Alfred Bedborough, it boasted an intricate ornamental style adorned with beautiful Portland stone. At the western end of the structure stood the renowned Aquarium Theatre, later renamed The Imperial Theatre in 1879. This grand venue witnessed countless performances and cultural events throughout its existence. However, as time passed, progress demanded change, leading to the unfortunate demise of this iconic landmark. In 1903, amidst a cloud of dust and debris, workers dismantled every inch of this once majestic edifice. Its framework now exposed for all to see through this photograph's lens serves as a poignant reminder that even great structures are not immune to time's relentless march. Today, standing proudly on the same site is Westminster Central Hall - a testament to modernity coexisting harmoniously with history. As we gaze upon this image from decades past, let us reflect on how our surroundings evolve over time while cherishing those remnants that still connect us to our rich heritage.
