Mighty moth... Genevieve and Gerard Peck have an exotic new pet - a giant moth from the Philippines with a wingspan of nearly 10 inches. Twelve-year-old Genevieve and her brother Gerard, eight, bought a moth cocoon from a butterfly sanctuary during a visit to Cleethorpes. Just over a month later it has hatched, and the Atlas moth is decorating the front room wall at their home in Mirfield. The childrens mother, Mrs Nancy Peck, said it was mostly brown with red, green and white tints. It is very pretty but we have been told that it only lives a fortnight she added. 30th September 1988

Mighty Moth - A Colorful Addition to the Peck Family
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the enchanting presence of an extraordinary creature in the Peck household. Genevieve and Gerard Peck, two adventurous siblings from Mirfield, have recently become proud owners of a remarkable pet - a giant moth all the way from the Philippines. With its impressive wingspan stretching nearly 10 inches wide, this Atlas moth has quickly become a stunning centerpiece adorning their front room wall. The story behind this unique acquisition began during a family trip to Cleethorpes when twelve-year-old Genevieve and her eight-year-old brother stumbled upon a butterfly sanctuary. Fascinated by nature's wonders, they purchased a cocoon that would soon unveil their magnificent new friend. Now fully emerged with shades of brown embellished by hints of red, green, and white tints, this majestic insect is truly a sight to behold. However beautiful it may be though, Mrs Nancy Peck reminds us that its time with them will be fleeting. The children's mother shares that despite its short lifespan of only two weeks or so, she finds great joy in witnessing such natural beauty within their home. This nostalgic photograph transports us back to September 30th in 1988 when families found solace in simple pleasures like welcoming exotic creatures into their lives. It serves as both an ode to childhood curiosity and an appreciation for the ephemeral beauty found within our natural world.
