EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous event in history - the arrival of the Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7 at the Science Museum in London on Monday, 14th May 1962. People from all walks of life can be seen queuing eagerly to catch a glimpse of this remarkable piece of technology that carried astronaut John Glenn into space just months before. Piloted by Glenn on February 20th, 1962, Friendship 7 completed three orbits around our planet, marking a significant milestone for American space exploration. Glenn's achievement made him not only the first US astronaut to orbit Earth but also the third American to venture into space after Alan B. Shepard and Virgil Ivan Gus Grissom. The image showcases the enthusiasm and curiosity that surrounded this groundbreaking feat as people patiently wait their turn to witness firsthand what it takes to explore beyond our atmosphere. The display at the Science Museum serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in pushing boundaries. In an era marked by fierce competition between nations in the race for space supremacy, this photograph encapsulates both national pride and global fascination with scientific progress. It reminds us of how far we have come since those early days of space exploration while inspiring us to continue reaching for new frontiers.
