A typhus team of No. 31 Mobile Field Hospital back their Fordson WOT1 Ambulance up to

A typhus team of No. 31 Mobile Field Hospital back their Fordson WOT1 Ambulance up to the freight doors of Douglas Dakota Mark III, KG523 H, of No. 267 Squadron RAF at Bari, as they prepare to unload any suspect cases from among the wounded and sick partisans and civilians of the Yugoslav National Liberation Army, who have been evacuated to Italy by the Balkan Air Force Casualty Evacuation Section. Typhus fever, bacillary dysentry and tuberculosis assumed epidemic proportions among the Yugoslav partisan forces, and it was necessary to arrange for specially-equipped typhus hospitals to be ready to deal with outbreaks among the evacuees promptly and effectively. Yugoslav partisans assisting the BAF Casualty Evacution Section can be seen running to the aircraft on the right.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photo print, we are transported back to August 1944 in Bari, witnessing the crucial work of No. 31 Mobile Field Hospital's typhus team. The image captures the moment when their Fordson WOT1 Ambulance is backed up to the freight doors of a Douglas Dakota Mark III aircraft, KG523 H, belonging to No. 267 Squadron RAF. The scene unfolds as wounded and sick partisans and civilians from the Yugoslav National Liberation Army are being evacuated by the Balkan Air Force Casualty Evacuation Section. With epidemic proportions of typhus fever, bacillary dysentery, and tuberculosis among these forces, specially-equipped hospitals were essential for prompt and effective treatment. As we observe closely, members of the Yugoslav partisans can be seen rushing towards the aircraft on the right side of the frame. Their assistance to the BAF Casualty Evacuation Section highlights their dedication in ensuring that those affected receive immediate medical attention. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of not only the challenges faced during World War II but also showcases how different branches of armed forces worked together tirelessly to combat disease outbreaks amidst wartime chaos. It stands as a testament to both medical advancements and human resilience in times of crisis. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints with utmost care and respect for historical significance, this image encapsulates an important chapter in our collective memory from that era.
