Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle, VC. Possibly 1915
Picture of Thomas Rendle (born Bedminster, Bristol on the 14th December 1884 and who was awarded the Victoria Cross) with some of his battalion colleagues, including an officer. He sits in the middle row, second from the left. At the time of his award he was a bandsman in the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry and was acting as a stretcher bearer. He was 29 years old. His citation reads " For his conspicuous bravery on 20 November 1914 near Wulvergem, when he attended to the wounded under very heavy shell fire and rifle fire, and rescued men from the trenches in which they had been buried by the blowing in of the parapets by the fire of the enemys heavy howitzers". He was the only stretcher bearer to receive a Victoria Cross in World War 1. His medal is held at the DCLI museum in Bodmin. He was awarded the medal by King George V on 12 July 1915. He died in 1946 in Cape Town South Africa. (During the war a soldier called Thomas Randle impersonated Rendle and attended talks and meetings etc. until he was eventually caught!) EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle, VC, alongside his fellow battalion colleagues, including an officer. Taken possibly in 1915, the image captures a moment of camaraderie and resilience amidst the chaos of World War I. Positioned in the middle row, second from the left, Corporal Rendle stands as a testament to bravery and selflessness. Born on December 14th, 1884 in Bedminster, Bristol, Thomas Rendle was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for his remarkable actions. At the time of receiving this honor, he served as a bandsman in the 1st Battalion of Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry but acted valiantly as a stretcher bearer during combat. His citation commends his conspicuous bravery on November 20th, 1914 near Wulvergem when he fearlessly tended to wounded soldiers under heavy shell fire and rescued men trapped by enemy howitzers' devastating blows. Notably unique among stretcher bearers during World War I, Corporal Rendle became the sole recipient of a Victoria Cross within this role. Today his medal is proudly displayed at Bodmin's DCLI museum. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan (not affiliated with any company), this poignant image immortalizes not only Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle but also serves as a reminder of countless unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives for others during one of history's most tumultuous periods. Tragically passing away in Cape Town South Africa in 1946 after war's end; it is worth noting that another soldier named Thomas Randle impersonated him throughout various talks and meetings until eventually being apprehended.
