Pelike, Southern Italy

A fawnware pelike, painted reddish brown, with a painted representation of a female face with wings on either side, dating from around 320 BC. Single female heads were a popular motif in the red-figure ware of Southern Italy. This decoration possibly represents Nike, the goddess of victory. Pottery such as this was usually used as a container for liquids. This pelike was collected from Pompeii, Italy. Bequest from Miss Mary Sophie Tucker

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fawnware pelike, originating from Southern Italy around 320 BC. Painted in a rich reddish-brown hue, the pelike features an exquisite representation of a female face with delicate wings on either side. This particular motif was highly favored in the red-figure ware of Southern Italy and is believed to depict Nike, the revered goddess of victory. Traditionally used as a vessel for liquids, this pelike was discovered amidst the ruins of Pompeii, Italy. It now finds its rightful place within the esteemed collection at Cornwall's Royal Cornwall Museum, thanks to Miss Mary Sophie Tucker's generous bequest. The intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail evident in this pottery piece are truly remarkable. The abstract depiction of the woman's face exudes elegance and grace while showcasing the artist's skillful brushwork. With its sturdy handles and decorative figure adorning its surface, this jar-like container served both practical and aesthetic purposes. Crafted from high-quality clay ceramic found abundantly in Campania region, this pelike stands as a testament to ancient artistry that has stood the test of time. Its earthy tones - reds, browns, whites - along with subtle hints of yellow create an alluring color palette that adds depth and character to any space fortunate enough to house it. Mike Searle expertly captures every nuance through his lens in this stunning print that invites viewers into a world where history meets beauty seamlessly within one object.
