Adrenaline, polarized light micrograph
Adrenaline. Polarized light micrograph of crystals of adrenaline (epinephrine). This is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands above the kidneys. Adrenaline is normally present in blood in small quantities. However, in times of stress large quantities are secreted into the blood- stream. Adrenaline widens the airways of the lungs, constricts small blood vessels and liberates sugar stored in the liver. This makes the muscles work harder and produce a " fight or flight" response. Adrenaline used as a drug expands the bronchioles in acute asthma attacks, or to stimulate the heart in cases of anaphylactic shock. Magnification: 50x

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Adrenaline, polarized light micrograph" showcases the intricate beauty of adrenaline crystals. Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands located above the kidneys. Normally present in small quantities in our blood, adrenaline takes center stage during times of stress when large amounts are secreted into our bloodstream. The image reveals an enchanting array of vibrant crystals under polarized light microscopy. These crystals represent the powerful effects adrenaline has on our body. When released, this hormone widens the airways of our lungs and constricts small blood vessels while liberating stored sugar from the liver. As a result, muscles work harder and prepare us for a "fight or flight" response. Beyond its natural role within our bodies, adrenaline can be used as a drug to treat specific conditions. For instance, it can expand bronchioles during acute asthma attacks or stimulate the heart in cases of anaphylactic shock. Photographer Alfred Pasieka skillfully captures this microscopic world with a magnification factor of 50x. The mesmerizing composition invites viewers to appreciate both the scientific significance and aesthetic appeal found within these tiny crystalline structures.
