Clubroot infection, light micrograph

Clubroot infection. Light micrograph a section through a cabbage root infected with clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae). Plasmodiophora is a parasitic protist that infects the roots of cabbages and attacks other crucifers, causing wilting, stunted growth and leaf death. Here, plasmodia (fertilised multinucleated cells, purple patches) can be seen infecting the root cells. These will divide to form new spores that are released when the host cell bursts. Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the devastating effects of clubroot infection on a cabbage root. The light micrograph reveals a section through the infected root, where Plasmodiophora brassicae, a parasitic protist, has taken hold. As an unwelcome guest in the crucifer family, this microscopic organism wreaks havoc by causing wilting, stunted growth, and ultimately leading to leaf death. In this image, we can observe plasmodia – fertilized multinucleated cells – as purple patches infecting the root cells. These plasmodia will multiply and give rise to new spores that are released upon bursting of the host cell. Magnified thirteen times when printed at ten centimeters wide, this photograph offers us a glimpse into the intricate world of plant pathology. The visual representation highlights not only the abnormality caused by this parasitic invasion but also serves as a reminder of how crucial understanding such diseases is for botany and biology research. With its focus on disease progression and cellular structures within plants, it provides valuable insights into histology and microbiological studies. Science Photo Library's dedication to capturing these scientific marvels allows us to appreciate both their aesthetic beauty and educational significance. This particular print serves as a powerful reminder of nature's delicate balance between health and disease in our botanical world.
