Coloured X-ray of heart showing dextrocardia

Heart dextrocardia. Coloured X-ray of the chest of a patient showing dextrocardia, a rare condition where the heart is situated in the right hand side of the chest (at left on image). The heart (red) is seen pointing towards the wrong side of the chest. But the aortic arch (the main artery leaving the heart) is on the normal left side here (at right on image), above the heart. The liver (dark green) is also on the normal side in the abdomen, at lower left. People with dextrocardia sometimes have their abdominal organs also rever- sed. The cause of dextrocardia is unknown. Treat- ment is unnecessary unless the heart is malformed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a coloured X-ray of a heart exhibiting an extraordinary condition known as dextrocardia. In this rare anomaly, the heart is positioned on the right-hand side of the chest instead of its usual location on the left. The image vividly illustrates how the heart (depicted in red) points towards the atypical side of the chest, while maintaining its normal orientation with respect to the aortic arch (the main artery leaving the heart), which appears on the left side. Interestingly, despite this unusual cardiac arrangement, other organs within the body remain in their typical positions. The liver (represented by dark green shading) can be seen situated on its customary left side in the abdomen. Dextrocardia may occasionally involve a reversal of abdominal organs as well. Although medical experts have yet to determine its exact cause, treatment for dextrocardia is generally unnecessary unless there are accompanying structural abnormalities within the heart. This mesmerizing image not only provides valuable insights into this intriguing medical condition but also serves as a testament to Science Photo Library's commitment to capturing and sharing remarkable visuals that contribute to our understanding of various diseases and disorders affecting human health.
