Durers Rhinoceros, 1515

Durers Rhinoceros, 1515. Albrecht Durer (1471- 1528) was a German artist. His skillful use of perspective and mathematical proportions made him one of the outstanding artistic figures of the early 16th century. Durer based this depiction of a rhinoceros upon sketches and descriptions of the animal. Inaccuracies are immediately visible such as the extra horn on its back and the scales on its legs. Taken from Dr Willi Kurths The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer (1936)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Albrecht Durer's iconic artwork, "Durers Rhinoceros, 1515". Durer, a renowned German artist of the early 16th century, was celebrated for his exceptional mastery of perspective and mathematical proportions. In this particular piece, he drew inspiration from sketches and descriptions to depict a rhinoceros. Although instantly noticeable inaccuracies exist in this interpretation - such as an extra horn on its back and scales on its legs - it remains a fascinating glimpse into historical zoology. The image transports us back to the exotic world of the 16th century when explorers were discovering new species from far-off lands. Rendered in monochrome through woodcut techniques, this illustration captures the essence of this magnificent herbivorous mammal. Its horned presence evokes both awe and curiosity about these fabulous beasts that roamed our planet centuries ago. The significance of "Durers Rhinoceros" lies not only in its artistic merit but also in its representation of Renaissance-era fascination with natural history. Dr Willi Kurths' inclusion of this masterpiece in his comprehensive collection further solidifies its importance within art history. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print by Science Photo Library, we are reminded that even though some details may be inaccurate by modern standards, it serves as a testament to humanity's eternal quest for knowledge about our natural world.
