Larvae of Solomons Seal Sawfly
A leaf of Solomons Seal ( Polygonatum x hybridum ) infested with larvae of the Solomons Seal sawfly, Phymatocera aterrima. Sawflies are so called due the females possessing serrated ovipositors that are used to cut an opening into leaves in which to lay their eggs. The larvae appear similar to the caterpillars of butterflies, but differ in eventually developing six pairs of false" abdominal legs. The picture shows a plant of Solomons Seal photographed in Norfolk UK in June. Left unchecked, infestations of P. aterrima can result in total defoliation of plants in the space of a few days."

Larvae Ovipositor Defoliation Sawfly
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate world of nature's interplay between insects and plants. The image showcases a leaf of Solomons Seal, Polygonatum x hybridum, infested with the larvae of the Solomons Seal sawfly, Phymatocera aterrima. These tiny creatures are known as sawflies due to the serrated ovipositors possessed by their females, which they use to create openings in leaves for egg-laying. Resembling caterpillars at first glance, these larvae differ in their development of six pairs of false "abdominal legs". The photograph was taken in Norfolk, UK during June when this fascinating interaction unfolded. However, if left unchecked, infestations by P. aterrima can lead to complete defoliation within just a few days. The image serves as a reminder that even seemingly insignificant organisms like sawflies can have significant impacts on plant life. It highlights the delicate balance between predator and prey in ecosystems and underscores the importance of understanding such relationships for ecological conservation. Dr Jeremy Burgess from Science Photo Library skillfully captured this moment in time where science meets artistry. His work allows us to appreciate both the beauty and complexity found within our natural world while shedding light on crucial scientific research surrounding insect-plant interactions.
