Leonardo Fibonacci, Italian mathematician
Leonardo Fibonacci statue. The Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci (c.1170-c.1250) travelled widely throughout the Mediterranean world and studied under leading Arab mathematicians. He introduced Arab numerals and the decimal system to Europe through his Book of the Abacus (Liber Abaci, 1202). Other publications included Practica geometriae (1220) and Liber quadratorum (1225). He also discovered the Fibonacci series, a sequence of numbers in which each number is the sum of the previous two. This series is often found in nature, for example in the patterns of leaf growth. Photographed in Pisa, Italy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a statue of Leonardo Fibonacci, the renowned Italian mathematician who made significant contributions to the field of mathematics during the medieval period. Born in the late 12th century, Fibonacci embarked on extensive travels across the Mediterranean and studied under esteemed Arab mathematicians. His groundbreaking work included introducing Europe to Arab numerals and the decimal system through his influential book, "Liber Abaci" in 1202. Fibonacci's intellectual prowess extended beyond numerical systems; he also delved into geometry with his publication "Practica geometriae" in 1220 and explored quadratic equations in "Liber quadratorum" released in 1225. However, his most famous discovery is undoubtedly the Fibonacci series – a sequence where each number is derived from adding up its two preceding numbers. This mathematical pattern can be observed throughout nature, particularly evident in leaf growth patterns. Captured against a picturesque backdrop of Pisa, Italy, this photograph immortalizes Leonardo Fibonacci's legacy as an instrumental figure bridging European and Arabic mathematical traditions during a transformative era. The sculpture exudes an air of wisdom and intellect that perfectly encapsulates Fibonacci's profound impact on history. This image from Science Photo Library serves as a visual tribute to one of history's greatest mathematicians whose invaluable contributions continue to shape our understanding of numbers even today.
