Prehistoric carved lion, Vogelherd Cave C015 / 6731

Prehistoric carved lion. Prehistoric carving in mammoth ivory of a lion. Some have identified the animal as a hippopotamus, hyena or rhinoceros. This Stone Age (palaeolithic) artefact (88 millimetres long) is among many found over the years from soil excavated in 1931 from the Vogelherd Cave, Germany. The ivory figurines have been dated to between 30, 000 and 36, 000 years ago, and are thought to have been produced by the Aurignacian culture. These early humans lived in Europe in the Late Stone Age (Upper Palaeolithic), between 45, 000 and 30, 000 years ago

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable prehistoric carved lion, discovered in the Vogelherd Cave of Germany. Crafted from mammoth ivory, this ancient artifact has puzzled experts who have debated whether it represents a lion, hippopotamus, hyena, or rhinoceros. Dating back between 30,000 and 36,000 years ago, this exquisite piece is believed to be created by the Aurignacian culture during the Late Stone Age. The photograph beautifully captures the intricate details of this stone age sculpture against a striking black background. The skillful craftsmanship and attention to anatomical accuracy are evident in every curve and contour of the figurine. This image provides us with a glimpse into the artistic abilities and cultural practices of our early human ancestors. Displayed as part of an archaeological collection in a museum setting, this single still life image allows us to appreciate not only its historical significance but also its biological representation. As we marvel at this magnificent creature frozen in time through sculpted ivory, we are reminded of our deep connection with wildlife throughout history. Through careful preservation and study by archaeologists and anthropologists alike, these portable works of art provide valuable insights into our past societies' beliefs and way of life. This photograph serves as both an educational tool for understanding prehistory and as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with nature's wonders.
