Roman elephant of war
Roman elephant of war, Coloured historical artwork. The Romans originally only used elephants to carry their emperor but soon realised they would be good in battle when they were seen to attack gladiators in entertainment fights. Initially they carried centurions (battle leaders) but then, as this image shows, went on to hold infantry soldiers. Later they were let loose on the battlefield to kill enemy soldiers, which reduced the number of Roman casualties. The Romans first employed elephants of war in Gaul, and used them to conquer Celtic Britain in AD 43. The Celts had not previously seen elephants and believed them to be powerful dragons, a major advantage to the Romans. Artwork published in Histoire de la Locomotion Terrestre (Paris, 1936)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Roman elephant of war, a historical masterpiece brought to life with vibrant colors. Originally intended solely for carrying their emperor, the Romans soon discovered the immense potential these majestic creatures held in battle. In entertainment fights, they witnessed elephants fearlessly attacking gladiators, prompting them to rethink their role on the battlefield. Initially entrusted with carrying centurions, as depicted in this image, these colossal beasts eventually became formidable carriers of infantry soldiers. The Romans took it a step further and unleashed them onto enemy soldiers during warfare, effectively reducing their own casualties. Gaul was witness to the first deployment of war elephants by the Romans before they utilized this fearsome advantage to conquer Celtic Britain in AD 43. The Celts were utterly astounded by these massive creatures and mistakenly believed them to be powerful dragons—a misconception that played into Rome's hands splendidly. This artwork from Histoire de la Locomotion Terrestre (Paris, 1936) transports us back to an era where technology met brute force on ancient battlefields. As we gaze upon this illustration brimming with history and antiquity, we are reminded of how innovation can shape conquests and alter destinies. The Roman empire harnessed the strength of these war elephants against adversaries like Carthage while leaving an indelible mark on human civilization. Let us marvel at this moment frozen in time—an emblematic representation of mankind's relentless pursuit for dominance through ingenious means.
