Schiaparellis observations of Mercury
Schiaparellis observations of Mercury. This drawing was made by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910). In the 1880s he mapped the planet more accurately, and suggested that Mercurys rotational period was 88 days, the same as its orbital period. From 1862, Schiaparelli was Director of the Milan Observatory for forty years. He is most famous for his observations of Mars, and also showed that meteors follow cometary orbits

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the meticulous observations of Mercury by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. Created in the 19th century, this intricate illustration provides a glimpse into Schiaparelli's groundbreaking work in mapping the planet with unparalleled accuracy. Schiaparelli's revolutionary findings challenged conventional wisdom as he proposed that Mercury's rotational period matched its orbital period, both spanning 88 days. Serving as Director of the Milan Observatory for an impressive four decades starting from 1862, Schiaparelli left an indelible mark on astronomical research. While renowned for his extensive studies on Mars, it is through this remarkable drawing that we witness his lesser-known exploration of Mercury. The spherical representation captures Mercurian geographical features meticulously mapped out by Schiaparelli himself. Transporting us back to a time when scientific discoveries were made through hand-drawn illustrations, this artwork offers a fascinating glimpse into planetary science during the late 1800s. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our solar system. As we admire this historical masterpiece, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also the immense dedication and intellectual prowess behind it. This print stands as a tribute to Giovanni Schiaparelli's invaluable contributions to astronomy and reminds us of how far we have come in unraveling the mysteries of our universe.
