Soviet Vostok spacecraft, display model
Soviet Vostok spacecraft, display model. There were a total of six manned flights in the Soviet Vostok programme, flying from 1961 to 1963. Vostok 1 is the most famous, carrying Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) into orbit on 12 April 1961 as the first human in space. Seen here is the third stage of the Vostok launcher (cylindrical, lower right), with the Vostok 3KA spacecraft attached to it. The spacecraft had an equipment module (centre) and a 2.3-metre-diameter crew module (spherical). Designed to house a crew of one, the crew module was also the re-entry capsule. Photographed in 1971 in Moscow, Russia, at the Kosmos Pavilion of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR (VDNKh)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a display model of the iconic Soviet Vostok spacecraft, symbolizing a pivotal era in space exploration. The Soviet Vostok program, spanning from 1961 to 1963, consisted of six manned flights that propelled humanity's quest beyond Earth's boundaries. However, it was the groundbreaking Vostok 1 mission on April 12,1961 that forever etched Yuri Gagarin's name into history as the first human to venture into space. In this image captured in Moscow during 1971 at the Kosmos Pavilion of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR (VDNKh), we see an extraordinary sight. The third stage of the Vostok launcher stands tall and cylindrical at its lower right corner while carrying the attached Vostok 3KA spacecraft. This spacecraft comprises an equipment module positioned centrally and a crew module with a spherical shape measuring approximately 2.3 meters in diameter. Designed for solo missions, this crew module also served as a re-entry capsule upon completion of its orbital journey. With technological precision and pioneering spirit intertwined within its structure, this remarkable display model represents both historical significance and technological advancement. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Science Photo Library, we are transported back to an era when nations raced against each other in pursuit of conquering outer space—a time when dreams took flight amidst rocket stages and descent capsules—ushering us into an age where humans dared to explore what lies beyond our home planet.
