Vostok 1 landing capsule
Vostok 1 landing capsule after re-entry. Known as " little ball", this was Yuri Gagarins descent module after he completed the first manned orbit of the Earth, on April 12 1961. It was later revealed that for safety reasons, Gagarin ejected whilst at altitude and parachuted the remainder of the descent. Gagarin made one complete revolution round the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft, with the flight lasting 108 minutes. The capsule weighed 2400 kilograms and measured just 2.3 metres in diameter. Evidence of the extreme heat of re-entry can be seen at the base of the capsule

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Vostok 1 landing capsule, affectionately known as the "little ball" after its successful re-entry. This historic descent module carried Yuri Gagarin, who achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first human to orbit the Earth on April 12,1961. The image reveals evidence of the intense heat experienced during re-entry at the base of this remarkable spacecraft. With a weight of 2400 kilograms and measuring only 2.3 meters in diameter, this compact capsule symbolizes both Soviet engineering prowess and technological advancement during the space race era. It is fascinating to note that for safety reasons, Gagarin ejected from Vostok 1 while still at altitude and completed his descent via parachute. The significance of this momentous achievement cannot be overstated; Gagarin's single revolution around our planet lasted an awe-inspiring 108 minutes. This photograph not only captures a pivotal event in history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. As we gaze upon this monochrome image from Science Photo Library, we are transported back to a time when space exploration was in its infancy. It reminds us of Russia's crucial role in shaping our understanding of outer space and igniting our collective imagination about what lies beyond Earth's boundaries.
