William Henry Bragg, British physicist
William Henry Bragg (1862-1942), British physicist. Bragg studied at Cambridge University, graduating as third wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos in 1884. Bragg then worked in Australia as a mathematics professor before returning to England in 1908. He became professor of physics at Leeds from 1909 and began his work on X-rays. With his son, he went on to examine the wavelengths of X-rays by using crystals, founding X-ray crystallography. Bragg and his son shared the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work, and Bragg senior was knighted in 1920. Artwork published in the Illustrated London News in 1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed British physicist, William Henry Bragg. Born in 1862, Bragg's intellectual journey began at Cambridge University where he excelled as a mathematics student, graduating as third wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos class of 1884. After a stint as a mathematics professor in Australia, Bragg returned to England in 1908 and assumed the role of professor of physics at Leeds. It was during his time at Leeds that Bragg embarked on groundbreaking research into X-rays alongside his son. Together, they delved into the study of X-ray wavelengths using crystals, ultimately establishing the field of X-ray crystallography. Their pioneering work earned them both the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. The artistic engraving featured here originally appeared in the Illustrated London News back in 1884 when Bragg was just starting out on his scientific journey. The detailed portrait captures him with an air of wisdom and determination befitting a man who would go on to make significant contributions to physics. William Henry Bragg's remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed by society; he was knighted for his accomplishments in 1920. This historical illustration serves as a testament to one man's unwavering dedication to science and his lasting impact on our understanding of X-rays and crystallography.
