A Paraceratherium mother grazes on leaves and twigs of a poplar tree

A Paraceratherium mother grazes on leaves and twigs of a poplar tree while her infant son stands nearby in a scene from 30 million years ago during the Rupelian Stage of the Oligocene Epoch in northwest China. Also in this scene on the lower left is a Palaeolagus, an extinct genus of the order lagomorpha, which includes modern hares, rabbits and pikas. On the lower right is a Palaeosciurus, the earliest known ground squirrel. Flying overhead are passerine ancestors of todays perching songbirds.
More massive than a modern African elephant, Paraceratherium is believed to be the largest mammal ever to have walked the Earth. Adult Paraceratherium are estimated to have been 18 ft tall at the shoulder with a maximum raised head height of 26 ft. They may have weighed as much as 20 tons. Related to modern rhinoceroses, Paraceratherium became extinct about 23 million years ago

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness a remarkable scene from 30 million years ago during the Rupelian Stage of the Oligocene Epoch in northwest China. A Paraceratherium mother gracefully grazes on leaves and twigs of a towering poplar tree, while her curious infant son stands nearby. This awe-inspiring creature, more massive than a modern African elephant, is believed to be the largest mammal ever to have walked the Earth. As we explore this ancient landscape further, our eyes are drawn to other fascinating inhabitants. On the lower left, we spot a Palaeolagus, an extinct genus of lagomorphs that includes modern hares, rabbits, and pikas. And on the lower right stands a Palaeosciurus - the earliest known ground squirrel. Above them all soar passerine ancestors of today's perching songbirds; their melodious tunes filling the air as they traverse through time. This vivid illustration not only showcases these magnificent creatures but also provides us with invaluable insights into Earth's natural history and evolution. It reminds us of how diverse and extraordinary life has been throughout different epochs. Let us marvel at this snapshot from prehistoric times – where herbivores roamed freely amidst lush vegetation and wildlife thrived in harmony with nature. It serves as a powerful reminder that our planet has always been teeming with wonders waiting to be discovered.
