A massive X-class solar flare erupts on the Sun

February 15, 2011 - Active region 1158 let loose with an X2.2 flare, the largest flare since 2006, and the biggest flare so far in Solar Cycle 24. Active Region 1158 is in the southern hemisphere, which has been lagging the north in activity but now leads in big flares. A coronal mass ejection was also associated with the flare. Much of the vertical line in the image is caused by the bright flash overwhelming the SDO imager

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring power of our Sun as a massive X-class solar flare erupts on its surface. Taken on February 15,2011, in Active region 1158, this X2.2 flare marks the largest and most significant outburst since 2006, making it a remarkable event within Solar Cycle 24. Located in the southern hemisphere, which had been trailing behind the north in terms of activity, Active Region 1158 now takes the lead with its impressive display of solar fireworks. The intensity of this eruption is evident from the vertical line that dominates the image; caused by the overwhelming brightness that momentarily overwhelmed SDO imager. Accompanying this extraordinary flare is a coronal mass ejection (CME), adding to the spectacle unfolding before our eyes. This CME propels charged particles into space and can have significant impacts on Earth's space weather. The photograph showcases various features of our star's anatomy such as corona loops, sunspots, and coronal holes against a striking black background. It provides us with an opportunity to marvel at plasma-filled transition regions between different layers - photosphere, chromosphere - while highlighting their intricate details. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image captured by Stocktrek Images' talented photographers using ultraviolet technology and astrophysical expertise, we are reminded once again of both the beauty and immense power emanating from our nearest celestial neighbor – a constant reminder of nature's grandeur beyond our planet's boundaries.
