EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history where fashion meets philanthropy. The image showcases the remarkable collection of exquisite gowns, generously offered to the nation by Dr C Willett Cunnington. These stunning garments, spanning from 1760 to 1930, are set to be worn by famous actresses and mannequins in an event called Fashion Contrasts. Under the patronage of the Duchess of Gloucester, this grand affair will take place at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in early April. The purpose behind this glamorous spectacle is to raise funds for Kings College hospital, a noble cause indeed. Intriguingly displayed at Dr Cunnington's home in Finchley (London), this particular snapshot focuses on two models adorned with attire from past centuries. On the left stands Sally West wearing a home spun linen chemise dating back to 1770. Her ensemble includes a jean corset reinforced with steels, an embroidered linen outside pocket, and a green sarsanet quilted petticoat. On the right is Edith Lambert elegantly donning a robe from 1761. Both women exude grace and charm as they bring these historical fashions back to life. This photograph not only transports us into an era long gone but also reminds us of how artistry can be harnessed for charitable purposes. It serves as a testament to our collective responsibility towards supporting healthcare institutions while celebrating the beauty that lies within our shared cultural heritage.
