EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photo, taken on October 8,1946, we witness a powerful moment of protest at London's prestigious Savoy hotel. The caption informs us that the waiters, chefs, and kitchen hands of the hotel have gone on strike in an effort to fight for their rights. The decision was made to leave tables bare and underserviced in the private suites, restaurant, and Grill room as a form of demonstration. The image captures Mrs. Kaufmann, wife of a chef at the Savoy hotel, bravely picketing outside the building during this early morning strike. She stands tall with determination alongside her fellow workers who are members of the London catering branch of the general and municipal workers union. According to reports from the strike committee mentioned in the caption, every other avenue for negotiation had been closed by management before they were forced to take this action. It is revealed that out of a total staff count of 800 individuals working at Savoy hotel during that time period; approximately 500 were part of this union. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of labor struggles faced by workers in mid-20th century Britain but also highlights women's participation in protests for better working conditions. It symbolizes resilience and unity among those fighting against injustice within their workplace environment.
