Lord Anson, (1829). Portrait of English naval commander George Anson, Baron Anson (1697-1762). Anson commanded a Royal Navy squadron of 6 ships sent to attack Spanish interests in South America at the outset of the War of Austrian Succession in September 1740. The expedition failed to achieve its military objective, 5 of the ships were lost and many of the crews succumbed to shipwreck and scurvy. Anson and the survivors aboard the remaining ship, the Centurion, arrived back in England in June 1744, having circumnavigated the globe. He was created a Baron after his victory over the French at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747 and was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty in 1751. [Thomas Kelly, London, 1829]

Lord Anson, (1829) - A Glimpse into the Life of a Distinguished Naval Commander
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases Lord Anson, an esteemed English naval commander from the 18th century. The portrait, created by J Jenkins in 1829, offers us a window into the life of this remarkable figure. George Anson was at the helm of a Royal Navy squadron comprising six ships during the War of Austrian Succession in 1740. Their mission was to attack Spanish interests in South America. Unfortunately, their military objective remained unfulfilled as five ships were lost and numerous crew members fell victim to shipwreck and scurvy. Despite these setbacks, Anson's resilience prevailed. He and his fellow survivors embarked on an epic journey aboard the Centurion that would eventually lead them back to England in June 1744 after circumnavigating the globe. Anson's triumph over the French at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747 earned him a well-deserved baronship. His exceptional leadership skills also saw him appointed as First Lord of Admiralty in 1751. This engraving captures not only Anson's determined countenance but also serves as a testament to his significant contributions to British naval warfare during this era. It stands as a reminder of his enduring legacy and unwavering dedication to serving his country. (Word Count: 200)
