Tsar Nicholas II at the opening ceremony of the first Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 1906
Tsar Nicholas II at the opening ceremony of the first Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 1906. The Duma, the elected legislative assembly of the Russian Empire, was established as a result of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), who opened the Duma, was determined to retain his autocratic power over the government of Russia however. Shortly before the Duma opened, he passed the Fundamental Laws, which stated that the Tsars ministers could not be appointed by and were not responsible to the Duma. Increasing tension between the Dumas members and Nicholass ministers led to the assembly being dissolved within ten weeks of its opening. EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: Tsar Nicholas II at the Opening Ceremony of the First Duma, St Petersburg, Russia, 1906 In this print from 1906, we witness a significant moment in Russian history as Tsar Nicholas II inaugurates the first Duma in St Petersburg. The Duma was established following the Russian Revolution of 1905 and served as an elected legislative assembly for the Russian Empire. However, despite opening this new democratic institution, Nicholas II remained determined to retain his autocratic power over the government. Just before its commencement, Nicholas II passed the Fundamental Laws which ensured that his ministers were not accountable to or appointed by the Duma. This decision created mounting tension between members of the assembly and Nicholas's ministers ultimately leading to its dissolution within a mere ten weeks. The photograph captures an atmosphere charged with anticipation and uncertainty. We see Tsar Nicholas II standing alongside various dignitaries and religious figures inside a grand chamber adorned with intricate details. The image offers us a glimpse into both political and religious aspects of early 20th-century Russia. Preserved in black-and-white monochrome tones, this historical snapshot is now held within the collection of Moscow's State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia. It serves as a reminder of an era marked by political upheaval and conflicting ideologies—a time when hopes for democracy clashed against entrenched autocracy under one powerful ruler—Tsar Nicholas II.
