China Clay - Memories
China Clay - Memories. Florence Mary Anderson / Molly MacArthur (1893-1972) had two distinct styles of illustration. From the middle of the 1920s, she moved on from earlier highly-decorative fairy art to produce beautiful monotone woodcuts in a distinctly oriental style. This artwork (as seen here) was produced under the name Molly MacArthur, or F.M. MacArthur.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning woodcut print, titled "China Clay - Memories," is a beautiful example of the later work of Florence Mary Anderson, also known as Molly MacArthur. Born in 1893, Anderson was a prolific English illustrator who is best known for her two distinct artistic styles. From the mid-1920s until the end of her career, she shifted away from her earlier, highly-decorative fairy art and began producing exquisite monotone woodcuts in an oriental style. The image before you, created in 1922, is a testament to Anderson's mastery of this new style. The title "China Clay - Memories" suggests a nostalgic longing for the East, and the print itself transports the viewer to a far-off land filled with serene beauty and tranquility. The intricate details of the Chinese landscape, from the winding river to the graceful trees and the delicate flowers, are rendered with a deft hand and a deep understanding of the oriental aesthetic. Anderson's use of monochrome in this print adds to its timeless quality. The absence of color forces the viewer to focus on the intricacies of the lines and the textures, creating a sense of depth and dimension that is both captivating and calming. This woodcut is a true masterpiece of the 1920s, and a testament to Anderson's artistic versatility and her ability to transport her audience to another world through her art.
