Boeing B-17G Fortress N3703G: A Veteran's Tale This historic photograph captures the iconic Boeing B-17G Fortress, registered as N3703G, in its role as a firefighting tanker during the late 1950s and 1960s. Originally built as a military B-17G-85-DL Fortress by Douglas at Long Beach in 1945, this aircraft, then known as 44-83546, served the United States Air Force (USAF) with distinction. After initial modifications in Topeka, Kansas, the Fortress was assigned to various bases in the US and Europe, including Patterson Field, Ohio, and Wiesbaden, Germany. During its military service, it was converted to a CB-17G, a VB-17G, and finally a B-17G, and was assigned to various units such as the 501st ASG and 7160th ABG. In 1954, it was placed in storage at Davis Monthan AFB. In July 1960, the Fortress was converted to a firefighting tanker and registered as N3703G. It was first operated by Edgar A. Neely-Fast-Way Air Service in Long Beach, California, and later by TBM Inc in Tulare, California, from 1967 to 1982. During this period, it was known by various numbers, including E75, E78, and E68. The Fortress was then loaned to the USAFM at March Air Force Base in California from 1983 to 1991, and was restored in Chino, California, from 1988 to 1989. It gained fame as the Memphis Belle in the movie of the same name, and was later damaged in a taxi accident in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1995. From 2000 to 2017, the Fortress was loaned to the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale, New York, and the 1941 Historic Aircraft Group in Geneseo, New York. Throughout its rich history, this Boeing B-17G Fortress has been a testament to the enduring legacy of military aviation.
