Brunel - you have wasted more of my time than your whole life is worth quote
In the 1830s IK Brunel had an assistant called FC Fripp. In one letter to Fripp Brunel writes Fripp. Plain gentlemanly language seems to have no effect on you. I must try stronger language and stronger methods. You are a cursed, lazy, inattentive, apathetic vagabond and if you continue to neglect my instructions I shall send you about your business. I have frequently told you, amongst other absurd, untidy habits, that of making drawings on the backs of others is inconvenient. By your cursed neglect of that you have wasted more of my time than your whole life is worth. It is not known what Fripp had done to deserve this message from Brunel, or why Brunel felt unable to fire him (as he did with other assistants who disappointed him)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: "A glimpse into the tempestuous relationship between Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his assistant FC Fripp, captured in this intriguing photo print. The quote, 'Brunel - you have wasted more of my time than your whole life is worth, ' reveals the frustration and exasperation that Brunel felt towards his subordinate during their collaboration in the 1830s. In an era characterized by gentlemanly conduct, it seems that Fripp's disregard for plain language pushed Brunel to resort to stronger words and methods. This scathing letter from Brunel showcases his deep disappointment with Fripp's laziness, inattentiveness, apathy, and untidy habits. Despite these harsh criticisms, it remains a mystery why Brunel did not dismiss Fripp like he had done with other assistants who failed to meet his expectations. The photograph offers a rare glimpse into the personal dynamics behind one of history's greatest engineering minds. It invites us to ponder what transpired between these two individuals that led to such strong emotions on Brunel's part. Perhaps it was a combination of factors or repeated instances of neglecting instructions. As we explore Victorian history through the lens of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's legacy, this image serves as a reminder that even great visionaries faced challenges within their teams. It also highlights the importance of effective communication and mutual understanding in achieving remarkable feats. "
