Heavily cratered highlands on the surface of Mars
Unlike the rolling volcanic plains of the north, the southern half of Mars is dominated by older, heavily cratered highlands. The distinctly lunar-like terrain of Terra Sirenum belies the fact that, unlike the Earths Moon, Mars has an active atmosphere.
In this rendering the perspective is from an altitude of about 30 miles and about 30 degrees from Mars south pole. The large crater with a central peak at the 2 o clock position near the horizon is Liu Hsin, with a diameter of 80 miles. Just beyond Liu Hsin is the southern rim of a much larger crater named Copernicus, with a diameter of 180 miles. To the west, high-flying cirrus clouds of water ice crystals form complex patterns in the tenuous carbon dioxide atmosphere

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the heavily cratered highlands on the surface of Mars, offering a stark contrast to the rolling volcanic plains found in the northern region. The southern half of Mars is dominated by these ancient, rugged terrains, reminiscent of our own Moon's lunar-like landscape. However, what sets Mars apart is its active atmosphere. Rendered from an altitude of approximately 30 miles and at a 30-degree angle from Mars' south pole, this image provides a breathtaking perspective. In view is Liu Hsin, a large crater with an impressive central peak located at the 2 o'clock position near the horizon. With a diameter spanning 80 miles, it serves as a prominent feature within Terra Sirenum. Just beyond Liu Hsin lies Copernicus, an even larger crater measuring 180 miles in diameter. Adding to the mystique are wispy cirrus clouds composed of water ice crystals that form intricate patterns against Mars' tenuous carbon dioxide atmosphere. These ethereal formations can be observed towards the western side of this otherworldly vista. Immerse yourself in this digitally generated artwork that captures both the beauty and desolation of Mars' red planet. This illustration not only invites exploration but also highlights the fascinating geological features and topography present on this alien landscape. It serves as a reminder that even though it may resemble our Moon at first glance, Mars possesses its own unique characteristics shaped by time and atmospheric activity.
