EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white Kingfisher print, created between 1749-73, showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular piece was later re-engraved by Seligmann. Combining elements from both Edwards' work and Mark Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann added his own touch to the plates. Translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not found in the originals, he brought a unique perspective to this masterpiece. The black and white Kingfisher depicted here is a true marvel. Its striking contrast against the monochromatic background creates a visually stunning effect that draws viewers closer. With meticulous attention to detail, every feather seems to come alive on paper. This print serves as a testament to the beauty found in nature's creatures. The delicate lines etched onto paper capture not only their physical attributes but also their essence. It transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate these magnificent birds as they were seen centuries ago. Displayed proudly in private collections worldwide, this engraving continues to inspire awe among art enthusiasts, bird lovers, and natural history aficionados alike. Its timeless appeal reminds us of our connection with nature's wonders while showcasing the skillful craftsmanship of two talented artists who dedicated themselves to capturing its splendor for generations
