Bronze head of Pazuzu, probably from Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), Neo-Assyrian, about 800-550 BC
Bronze head of Pazuzu, probably from Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), northern Iraq, Neo-Assyrian, about 800-550 BC. Pazuzu was an Assyrian and Babylonian demonic god of the first millennium BC. However, he also seems to have played a protector role against disease-bearing winds (especially the west wind). He was closely associated with the demoness Lamashtu who stole babies from their mothers womb or when newly born. Pazuzu acted to counter her evil: he forced her back to the underworld. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Bronze head of Pazuzu, believed to be from the ancient city of Nimrud (Kalhu) in northern Iraq. Dating back to the Neo-Assyrian period around 800-550 BC, this artifact represents Pazuzu, a demonic god prominent in Assyrian and Babylonian mythology. Pazuzu's significance goes beyond his malevolent reputation as he also served as a protector against disease-bearing winds, particularly the west wind. This association with health is intriguing, considering his demonic nature. Furthermore, Pazuzu's role extended to countering the evil deeds of Lamashtu, a demoness known for stealing babies either during pregnancy or after birth. He played an instrumental part in forcing her back into the underworld. Housed within the esteemed British Museum collection, this bronze head offers us a glimpse into ancient religious beliefs and practices prevalent in Mesopotamia during that era. The intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident even today. The image captures not only the essence of this powerful deity but also reflects on our fascination with history and its diverse range of mythologies across different cultures. It serves as a reminder that religion has always been deeply ingrained within societies throughout time and continues to shape our understanding of spirituality. With its rich cultural heritage and historical significance, this photograph invites viewers on a journey through time while highlighting the importance of preserving such artifacts for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
