The Last Rest (The Grave of Scott, Wilson and Bowers), November 1912, (1913)
The Last Rest (The Grave of Scott, Wilson and Bowers), November 1912, (1913). A snow cairn with cross on top marks the tent in which expedition leader Captain Robert Scott, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Dr Edward Wilson died. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

The Last Rest (The Grave of Scott, Wilson and Bowers), November 1912, (1913)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This poignant print captures a solemn moment in history - the final resting place of Captain Robert Scott, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Dr Edward Wilson. In November 1912, a snow cairn with a cross atop was erected to mark the tent where these brave explorers met their untimely end. Captain Scott's Terra Nova Expedition set out on an ambitious journey to conquer the South Pole in June 1910. The team consisted of scientists from various fields who aimed not only to reach the pole but also conduct vital scientific research. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to the harsh Antarctic conditions at the end of March. It would be eight long months before their bodies were discovered alongside heart-wrenching diaries that chronicled their struggle for survival. This photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II - a testament to human resilience and sacrifice in pursuit of knowledge and exploration. It serves as a somber reminder of the perils faced by those who dare venture into uncharted territories while honoring the memory of these courageous men who gave everything for science and discovery.
