EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Brazilian Giant-Rhubarb, Gunnera manicata, a remarkable tropical plant native to South America. The image, created by the skilled hand of Belgian botanical illustrator P. de Pannemaeker for Jean Linden's Horticole Illustration in Brussels in 1884, showcases the plant in all its glory. Gunnera manicata, also known as Brazilian rhubarb or giant rhubarb, is a large herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 6 feet tall. Its large, lobed leaves, which can reach up to 6 feet in length and 4 feet in width, are a striking sight. The plant's most notable feature, however, is its large, spadix-like inflorescence, which appears in late summer. The inflorescence is surrounded by a large, hood-like spathe, which can be up to 10 feet long and 4 feet wide. The Brazilian Giant-Rhubarb is native to the Atlantic Forest region of Brazil and is well-adapted to the humid, tropical climate. It is an important plant in traditional medicine, with the rhizomes being used to treat various ailments, including fever, diarrhea, and skin conditions. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph is a testament to the artistry and skill of botanical illustration during the late 19th century. It provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing the fascination and wonder that botanists and collectors had for exotic and unusual plants from around the world.
