EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon illustration by Alfred Chantrey Courbold, dated 1909, depicts a group of determined Suffragettes making a bold statement for women's rights as they swim towards a flotilla of toy boats. The women, dressed in their iconic suffrage colors, are propelled forward by their unwavering commitment to the cause. In the background, large "Votes for Women" banners wave in the wind, while pro-suffrage leaflets rain down from a hot air balloon in the sky. This imaginative scene is a nod to the daring attempt made by Muriel Matters, a prominent Suffragette, to fly an airship over the House of Commons in February 1909. Though she missed her target, she released 6lbs of Womens Freedom League leaflets into the skies above London, spreading the message of women's suffrage far and wide. The whimsical touch of the toy boats and the hot air balloon adds a playful yet powerful element to this image, emphasizing the creativity and resilience of the Suffragette movement. Alfred Chantrey Courbold's original artwork, created in 1852 and completed in 1920, remains a testament to the enduring spirit of the women who fought for their right to vote and to be heard.
