Lunar eclipse
Lunar eclipse over moai statues on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in the South Pacific. The Moon does not shine by its own light, but reflects the light of the Sun. During a lunar eclipse the Moon passes into the shadow cast by the Earth. The megalithic moai statues were carved from volcanic rock by the islanders from 400-1500 AD. Many are now buried in the soil formed by centuries of erosion. Photographed at the Rano Raraku crater
