EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - an RAF flying suit from the 1940s. Worn by pilots in Britain's Royal Air Force during World War II, this one-piece "Sidcot" flying suit was a crucial part of their personal equipment. The suit, which is a redevelopment of the original Sidcot suit from World War I, was introduced in 1930 and underwent continual improvements until its retirement after the war. The khaki brown cotton coverall features a fold-down fur collar that wraps around the neck for added warmth and protection. It has a zip-down front with three brown buttons on the left side, along with large patch pockets on both the chest and thighs. The wrist and ankle cuffs are equipped with zip closures for ease of wear. Transferred to the museum by the Royal Air Force Museum, this particular flying suit carries no known information about its wearer. However, it represents countless brave individuals who served their country during one of history's most challenging times. Displayed at the National Air and Space Museum as part of their extensive collection, this artifact offers visitors an opportunity to connect with our aviation heritage. As we admire this well-preserved piece of clothing alongside other objects related to flight and warfare from World War II, we gain insight into the sacrifices made by those serving in Britain's armed forces during that tumultuous era.
